This project, the Tier 2 Environmental Assessment and Design Report, will study the impacts and design alternatives of a proposed rail grade separated overpass, or flyover, in south Springfield near the Village of Southern View.
The meeting will be held in an open house format. IDOT representatives will be on hand to answer questions throughout the open house.

The purpose of the Springfield Flyover is to enhance passenger rail service by reducing delays and congestion as part of the Chicago to St. Louis High-Speed Rail Program. Currently, a pair of at-grade rail crossovers north of Stanford Avenue allow Union Pacific (UP) and Norfolk Southern (NS) trains to cross each other. The former must wait for clearance from NS dispatchers before proceeding. In order to meet the high-speed rail schedule required by IDOT, the at-grade rail crossing must be eliminated.
